Message a closed loop is where there's feed back involved... i.e. O2 sensors read by ECU, ECU adjusts fuel, adjusted A/F ratio gets read by the O2 sensors, O2 sensors read ECU, ECU adjusts fuel, etc. etc.

an open loop is where it is a "broken" loop... i.e. O2 sensors display a voltage, the ECU does NOT adjust fuel according to O2 sensor voltage and instead follows a pre-programmed fuel curve. this is what happens at WOT.
